Goal Grabbers Grab a Record
A record 38 teams and over 330 children took part in Broomleigh’s highly successful 7th annual Goal Grabbers Tournament this weekend. The event, held at Goal Soccer Centre, Elmers End Road, Beckenham, also had a record turnout from parents of the children taking part.
Nicola Brown, joint organiser with fellow Broomleigh community investment officer Erica Pickett, said: “This event has really taken off and just grows and grows in popularity. The event included teams from much further afield than in previous years. Despite the scorching heat, the standard of play was very high and the competition was thoroughly enjoyed by the players.”
The 38 teams were divided into four age groups from six to 16 year-olds and volunteer referees were provided by Orpington Football Club and the Kent Schools League.
David Shrimpton, vice-chairman of Affinity Sutton, Broomleigh’s parent group who attended the Goal Grabbers 2007 event, said: “Clearly Goal Grabbers has become established as one of the major sporting events for local children during the summer holidays. It is very popular with our residents, but also an increasing number of local children who form their own teams.”
In the very hot weather the Federation of Broomleigh Residents, who have been keen supporters of the event, helped out with a very busy stall providing free fruit and water.
